Woods Basement Systems, Inc. Case Studies: Egress Window Installation in Maryville, IL
Challenge
Joe O. had a finished basement that had a drainage problem around one of the small windows. Joe decided to contact Woods Basement Systems to inquire about a solution to the drainage problem around the window and possibly replacing it. Systems Design Specialist Paul White came out to look at the problem and design a solution based on Joe's needs.
Solution
The best solution for Joe was to replace the existing window with a RockWell™ egress window and SunHouse™ window well. This would not only allow more light into Joe's basement, but also solve the drainage problem, by having an exterior sump pump drain the water from the window well.
Foreman Tom Borkowski and his team came out to install the egress window, window well, and sump pump. The team first cleared the outside area to install the window well, which consisted of two pieces, the well and the step, which fastens to the well for a seamless look. To install the window, the team cut out the wall to fit the egress window.
After the window and window well installations, the team installed an exterior sump pump next to the window well that would expel any water collecting inside and near the window well. Also installed was the IceGuard® discharge line that would allow water to exit the lines in the event that the discharge line freezes over, so it does not back up into the window well or into the basement.
After the sump pump and window well were installed the well was fitted with a poly-carbonate safety cover that would prevent leaves and other debris out of the window well. The cover can be easily moved for exit, and can withstand up to 500 pounds of weight, so there would be no worry of falling through the cover.
Since the Egress Window meets the building codes, the living space in the basement increases the total square footage of the home and therefore increase the home’s value.
