The Silent Killer

What is colorless, odorless, and tasteless and can severely harm you and your family?  Radon.  This gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water.  It is the second leading cause of lung cancer and causes over 21,000 deaths each year.  Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped in our lungs when we breathe.  The breakdown of these particles can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer.

Radon can enter a home through foundation cracks and other opening due to the difference in pressure between the soil and the foundation.  But lucky for us, testing is easy!  You can either get a do-it-yourself kit and test yourself or contact your local National Radon Defense (NRD) dealer.  If you call them, they will spend a specialist to come out and test your home for you.

If your home tests positive, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you have a qualified Radon mitigation contractor fix your home.  A radon mitigation system will be set up in your home.  These systems have been proven to reduce humidity, musty odors, the natural soil gases that come into the home, and overall improve air quality.  It will reduce the risks for lung cancer and give you peace of mind that now you are living in the safest, healthiest home.  Be aware about this silent killer and take the necessary steps to protect you and your family.
