DIY Disasters Anonymous: When Homeowners Try It... and Call Us
We’ve all seen it: a “simple DIY project” that somehow turns into a full-blown home improvement horror story. At Woods Basement Systems, we’ve been called in more times than we can count to rescue homes from the aftermath of enthusiastic—but misguided—DIY attempts. Welcome to DIY Disasters Anonymous, where we laugh, learn, and fix it all.
The Great Sump Pump Saga
One homeowner thought they could install a sump pump over the weekend with a YouTube tutorial and a borrowed wrench set. Fast forward two days: a flooded basement, a half-installed pump, and a trail of water that could rival Niagara Falls. Our team swooped in, installed a reliable sump pump system, and ensured proper drainage so the basement would never see that “weekend waterfall” again.
Concrete Calamities
Cracked patios, uneven floors, and half-measured slabs… we’ve seen it all. One DIYer tried to “patch” a sinking concrete slab with quick-set cement—without leveling or addressing the underlying problem. The result? A lumpy, unsafe surface that looked more like modern art than a patio. With PolyLevel®, we lifted and stabilized the slab, then sealed all cracks with NexusPro® to make it safe, level, and durable.
Crawl Space Catastrophes
Encapsulation attempts gone wrong are a favorite. Plastic sheeting tucked in with duct tape, insulation left hanging, and moisture traps ignored… it’s enough to make a crawl space cry. We came in with CleanSpace®, installed a proper vapor barrier, and added a floor water alarm to keep the space dry and healthy—no duct tape required.
The Lesson
DIY projects can be fun—but sometimes it’s best to call in the pros. Our team combines experience, the right materials, and a sense of humor to turn disasters into safe, dry, and beautiful results. And the best part? We do it without causing the homeowner more stress (or more water damage).
