Preventing Basement Water Damage This Fall

  Outside Your Home

• Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves and other debris from your gutters to prevent water from overflowing. Ensure your downspouts are properly attached and extend at least six feet away from your home's foundation to direct water runoff.

   
   

• Regrade Your Yard: Check the slope of the ground around your house. It should gently slope away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling. A recommended slope is about 6 inches for every 10 feet.

   
   
   

• Maintain Window Wells: Clean out any leaves or debris that have accumulated in your basement window wells. Consider installing covers to keep water and debris out.

   
   

• Trim Trees: Trim back tree branches that are close to your roof or foundation. Large roots can also potentially damage your foundation.

• Inspect and Seal Cracks: Walk through your basement and check for any cracks in the walls or floor. Use a waterproof sealant or hydraulic cement to fill minor cracks. For larger cracks (over a quarter-inch), it is best to consult a professional.
