Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Woods Basement Systems is taking action against radon in November for National Lung Cancer Awareness month.
COLLINSVILLE, Ill.— Thousands of people in Illinois and Missouri could be saved from radon-related lung cancer thanks to the just released National Radon Action Plan. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the plan, called “A Strategy for Saving Lives,” November 10th. In a partnership between the EPA, the American Lung Association, and other agencies, the plan’s goal is to decrease lung cancer deaths by 3,200 people annually through the installation of 5 million radon reduction systems.
Woods Basement Systems is the local leader in radon, the cancer-causing gas that can seep into homes, businesses, and schools and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Woods Basement System’s radon experts can help determine if a building’s radon levels are above the EPAs recommended 4.0 pCi/L, and if so, can install an aesthetically pleasing and affordable radon mitigation system.
The National Radon Action Plan sets a new strategy to reduce radon exposure. That includes requiring radon testing and reduction systems as a standard practice in housing finance and insurance programs. It also encourages institutionalizing radon risk reduction through building code requirements. The plan is a collaborative effort between the EPA and other national organizations dedicated to lowering radon exposure, like the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST), of which Woods Basement Systems is a member.
Owner Rick Woods says the National Radon Action Plan will help save lives here and all over the United States. “Our radon associations have been working with the EPA for a few years to get this Radon Action Plan finalized,” said Woods. “Through our continued work to increase awareness about radon’s dangers and the Plan’s proposed required testing, I look forward to the day when we can eliminate lung cancer deaths caused by radon exposure.”
