Woods Basement Systems, Inc. Case Studies: Finding Comfort in Moscow Mills Home
Challenge
This Moscow Mills homeowner had an uncomfortable home due to the various air flows that were seeping in and out of the living area. The first floor, master bedroom and laundry room were drafty, dry and sometimes excessively dusty, also causing electric bills to rise. The homeowner wanted to address the issues and solve them once and for all.
Solution
There are many solutions to the issue regarding this home’s comfort. The first step Dr. Energy Saver took was to use a spray foam air seal and insulate the accessible rim joist on the first floor. This is done to reduce air infiltration, conductive heat transfer, humidity and dryness and improve indoor air quality.
The next step took the team down to the basement, to install blocking in each joist bay and again apply the spray foam air seal over the blocking to create a thermal barrier and stop infiltration of air into the house.
In order to make the master bedroom more accommodating, the knee wall supporting the rafters needed a two part spray foam applied to improve thermal boundary and prevent air transfer between the attic and conditioned space.
For the laundry room, ventilation baffles were installed in order to preserve air flow through existing soffit vents, as well as preventing insulation from filing the vents. Also, loose-fill cellulose insulation was blown into the attic to improve thermal boundary between the attic and conditioned space.
Now this homeowner can sit back and enjoy the comfort of his own home, without the worry of a high electric bill.
