Casey T. of Rochester, IL wanted to use his crawlspace for storage but there was was a problem. Water seeped in through the foundation walls of the crawlspace and turned the dirt floors into a muddy mess making it completely unusable. Casey called Woods Basements Systems for a free assessment. Design Specialist Nolan M. inspected the crawlspace and recommended installing an encapsulation system.

Woods encapsulated the crawlspace using CleanSpace vapor barrier. CleanSpace is a thick, durable plastic liner that prevents water from entering the crawlspace. Drainage Matting was installed under the CleanSpace over the dirt floors. It’s dimpled so it provides channels for standing water in the crawlspace to disperse out of the crawlspace.

A SmartDrain was installed in the crawlspace and seamlessly with the CleanSpace vapor barrier. If there is ever a plumbing leak into the encapsulated crawlspace, the SmartDrain will collect the water to be drained into a bed of gravel where it will flow into a dry well and seep into the soil below. The SmartDrain is also equipped with a WaterWatch alarm system so if water is detected entering the drain, the homeowner will know there’s an issue before it becomes an even bigger problem.

Crawlspace Encapsulated in Chatham, IL

David and Betty B. of Chatham, IL had a crawlspace that had water seeping into it and turning the dirt floors to mud. They couldn’t use the space for anything and it was just an eyesore. They had old, rusted window wells and leaky windows. David and Betty already knew the benefits of crawlspace encapsulation because they’d previously had Woods Basement Systems encapsulate their larger crawlspace. They knew Woods would be the right company to also take care of their smaller crawlspace so they asked for a free estimate. Design Specialist Nate H. assessed their crawlspace and window wells and gave them the perfect solution.

Woods installed CleanSpace Vapor Barrier to seal off the crawlspace. It is a thick plastic liner that prevents moisture from entering into the basement. Under the CleanSpace, Drainage Matting was installed over the dirt floors. Drainage Matting is dimpled so it creates channels for any standing water in the crawlspace to disperse. A SmartDrain was installed within the encapsulated crawlspace. It works with the CleanSpace to create a seamless, airtight seal. If there is ever a plumbing leak within the crawlspace, the SmartDrain will collect and drain away the water out of the encapsulated crawlspace. It also has a WaterWatch Alarm that will alert the homeowner to water within the crawlspace so they’ll know there’s a problem before it turns into a more costly disaster.

SunHouse Window Wells and Everlast Windows were also installed. SunHouse Window Wells are made of reinforced plastic that will never rust and requires no maintenance. The design brings more light into the crawlspace and will keep out dirt, moisture and pests. The EverLast Windows have a vinyl frame that won’t rust or right and they are double-paned to prevent heat loss.

David and Betty B are thrilled that their smaller crawlspace has been transformed into a usable, dry space and how much brighter their crawlspace is.

Crawlspace Encapsulation in Springfield, IL

Kurt and Laurie R.’s Springfield, IL home had a large crack along the foundation floor as well as vertical cracks in their drywall and crawlspace foundation wall. They found out that they had mine subsidence occurring under their home which was causing their foundation to settle. They were also having issues with water getting into the crawlspace and partially finished basement. Their crawlspace was completely unusable due to the water intrusion and it took hours to clean up and fan dry their basement so their called Woods Basement Systems. Design Specialist Nolan M. assessed their foundation and inspected their crawlspace and basement and recommended installing a crawlspace encapsulation and basement waterproofing system as well as Push Piers.

Woods installed Push Piers along the footing of the home. High-strength steel pier sections are hydraulically driven into stable earth or bedrock below and then attached to steel brackets on the footing of the home. This transfers the weight of the home to through the piers to competent, load-bearing earth and permanently stabilizes the foundation.

Along the crawlspace walls and floors, CleanSpace was installed. CleanSpace is a thick, durable moisture barrier that prevents water from entering the crawlspace and instead directs it to the drainage system.

Under the CleanSpace, drainage matting was installed on the dirt floors of the crawlspace. Drainage matting has a dimpled design that provides channels for standing water in the crawlspace to disperse to the drainage system for removal.

SmartPipe was installed along the perimeter of the crawlspace, against the walls. It has multiple rows of holes that are covered in a filter fabric that prevents mud or debris from clogging it as it collects water from the dirt floors and foundation walls of the basement and takes it to the sump pump for removal.

Push Piers Stabilize Foundation in Springfield, IL

Stair step and vertical cracks in foundation walls like the ones Wade K. noticed in his Springfield, IL home are signs of foundation settlement. Soil conditions on the exterior of the foundation is the major cause of settlement. Soil can shrink and create voids when dry, move when wet or compress if it wasn’t compacted properly when the home was built, all of which cause the foundation to settle. If the foundation doesn’t settle uniformly, it can lead to the separations and cracks, which is why Wade called Woods Basement Systems. Woods recommended installing Push Piers.

Woods installed the Push Piers are installed inside the basement of the home. Push Piers are made of high-strength steel sections that are hydraulically driven through steel brackets down into competent, load-bearing soil or bedrock. They transfer the weight of the home from the unstable soil conditions responsible for the settlement to the competent soil or bedrock. In many cases, Push Piers can also lift the home back to level position. After the Push Piers are in place and the home has been lifted, the Push Piers are attached to the concrete footing and locked into place to permanently stabilize the foundation. When Push Piers are installed inside the home, they are cemented over to flush position with the rest of the basement floor.

Wade K. now has peace of mind that his foundation and home are safe and permanently stable.

Damp, Humid Crawl Space Encapsulated in Chatham, IL

Amy B. of Chatham, IL had a damp crawl space. The flimsy plastic liner she had in there bunched and did nothing to keep moisture out. High humidity in the crawl space had started to rot the wooden floor joists and the space was completely unusable for storage so she called Woods Basement Systems. Design Specialist Kevin E. inspected the crawl space and recommended an encapsulation system.

Woods secured CleanSpace over the foundation walls and dirt floors of the crawl space. CleanSpace is a durable, thick plastic moisture barrier. It prevents moisture from entering into the crawl space through the walls or floors. It’s mold resistant and its bright white color maximizes the amount of available light within the crawl space.

Under the CleanSpace, Woods installed Drainage Matting along the dirt floor of the crawl space. Drainage Matting has a dimpled design that gives channels for any water that might seep into the crawl space to disperse.

The SmartDrain was also installed in the crawl space. It’s lid forms an airtight, seamless seal with the CleanSpace. The SmartDrain is designed for encapsulated crawl spaces to prevent the space from filling with water if there is a plumbing leak and collect water from groundwater problems beneath the liner. Water is directed towards the special ball-and-cup drain to be drained to a bed of gravel below where it will flow into a dry well and seep into the soil below. The WaterWatch alarm in the lid of the SmartDrain alerts the owner to a plumbing leak so it can be taken care of before it turns into a major problem.

The SaniDry dehumidifier was installed in the crawl space to keep the relative humidity low. It’s energy efficient but powerful, removing up to 109 pints of water per day from crawl space air. It prevents musty smells and the conditions that cause mold growth and rot.

Amy B. has peace of mind that she can safely use her crawl space for storage without worry about damage from moisture or humidity.

They have a reflective coating that creates a radiant barrier to reflect heat back into the space. SilverGlo forms an air barrier over the foundation walls to make the home more energy efficient. It’s waterproof and won’t become damaged by mold so it is effective at preventing moisture from entering the crawl space through the foundation walls.

CleanSpace was installed over the dirt floors of the crawl space and sealed against the SilverGlo. CleanSpace is is a thick, durable plastic moisture barrier that prevents moisture from entering the crawl space through the dirt floors to keep the crawl space safe for storage.

Drainage matting was installed underneath the CleanSpace. Its dimpled design creates channels for standing water under the encapsulation system to disperse.

Don M. has peace of mind that he can use his crawl space for storage without fear of water damage and his insulation will end up saving him money on his energy bills.

The moisture also made it essentially impossible to use the space effectively, and Brad was ready to do something about it.

In order to waterproof the basement, a Woods Basement Systems team began by installing under-floor WaterGuard drains at the base of the leaking walls to catch any and all water. After this, a TripleSafe sump pump, equipped with three separate pumps and capable of removing over 10,000 gallons of water per hour, was put in place. Brad's basement is now totally water-free!

Cracked, Bowing Springfield, IL Basement Walls Supported With GeoLock

Brad L. of Springfield, Illinois was very worried about the state of his basement walls. Over the years, they had become riddled with cracks and had begun to slightly bow. Brad was concerned that this damage, if left unaddressed, would eventually lead to a total wall collapse. With this in mind, he gave Woods Basement Systems a call.

In order to reinforce Brad's damaged walls, foreman Juan and his team installed several GeoLock wall supports. These work by connecting heavy anchors buried deep in the firm soil far from the home to steel plates affixed to the interior surface of the damaged walls, effectively pulling them outward over time. Brad can rest easy now that his walls are secured!

Jean J. of Springfield, Illinois was sick and tired of the leaks in her basement. Anytime it rained, water would come out of cracks in the walls and pool on the floor. This constant moisture required constant cleanup, and Jean was ready to have the problem taken care of once and for all.

These gutter-like drains are placed underneath the floor at the base of the leaking walls to catch any and all water before it makes its way into the space itself. Jean's basement is now protected from water and she couldn't be happier!

Drying Damp Air

Basements are often known for damp, dank air that makes them feel like caves. But this doesn't have to be the case. Just ask Melissa C. from Springfield, IL.

Melissa C. had a waterproofing system in her basement that could deal with water leaks from her basement walls or floors, but even the best sump pumps can't keep the air feeling dry. That's why Todd G. installed the wonderful Sedona dehumidifier.

The Sedona dehumidifier is a powerful dehumidifier that can draw over 12 gallons of water from the air in a day! On top of that, the Sedona boasts an incredible air filter that can pull tiny particles like mold spores from the air.

With the Sedona in her basement, Melissa C. doesn't have damp cave air in her basement, she has comfortable home air instead.

TripleSafeâ„¢ Protection

A TripleSafe™ sump pump system was installed in this home in O'Fallon, IL. to work with the WaterGuard™ drainage system and keep the basement dry.

Around the basement, at the foot of the walls, WaterGuard™ drains collect water that seeps into the basement through the gap between the floor and the wall. It then directs this water to the TripleSafe™ sump pump system.

The flagship of sump pump systems, the TripleSafe™ is a three-pump system that can pump water out of the home in even the toughest conditions. One of the three pumps is battery operated and can kick in either when water gets too high for the first two pumps or when the power goes out to keep the water pumping out of the basement. This sump pump is always working when you need it.

As if that wasn't enough, the lid to the sump pump liner also features a floor drain with an alarm that can alert homeowners of any leaks coming from above so that they could check for plumbing leaks or other drips.

Every angle is covered with the TripleSafe™ sump pump system and WaterGuard™.

Fixing an Uneven Sidewalk

Michael H. from St. Louis, MO. had a concrete path on his property that was slightly uneven on one side. The result was a sidewalk that was not level and created a tripping hazard where the shifted slabs met the slabs that hadn't moved.

To fix this problem, Michael H. turned to the experts at Woods Basement Systems, who advised the use of PolyLevel™. PolyLevel™ is an advanced polymer that gets injected beneath the sunken slabs as a foam. Once beneath the slab, the foam solidifies into a sturdy yet light-weight structure that will hold up the concrete slab without adding to the weight on the ground beneath it. PolyLevel™ is installed through small holes that can be repaired and is dried and ready to be used the same day.

With PolyLevel™, Michael H. will have an even and safe sidewalk that will be ready for traffic that same day.

Sealing Gaps in Concrete

When concrete is poured, it is usually poured in slabs that are placed next to one another. Sealant is installed between the slabs to keep them from grinding against one another and to keep things like rainwater from leaking underneath and eroding the soil beneath the concrete. Unfortunately, this seal sometimes doesn't last. Other cracks might also appear in the concrete as the slab shifts and settles.

These cracks are not just ugly, but can also weaken the concrete further over time. Water can seep through these gaps and erode the soil beneath and the natural expanding and contracting that the concrete slabs experience can cause them to grind up against one another or cause the cracks to worsen. To protect the slabs and improve the longevity of the sidewalk, these gaps must be resealed.

The orignal seal, as well as many DIY solutions that can be found at a home improvement store, might work for a while, but will often degrade and become unable to protect the concrete slabs. That's why the experts at Woods Basement Systems use NexusPro™ sealant. This sealant is a clear and tough sealant that can stand up to the pressures of concrete expanding and contracting. It's also waterproof and UV protected, meaning it won't wash away or get dried up by the sun. NexusPro™ will prevent water from leaking beneath the slabs and can keep the slabs and cracks from grinding against each other and dealing more damage.

Once all the debris is cleared from the gaps and cracks, NexuPro™ will be installed and these slabs will be protected from water damage and grinding.

Wall Anchors Installed in Springfield, IL.

When homes are constructed, a large amount of earth is removed to make room for the foundations. After the foundations are constructed, this earth is returned in a process called backfilling. Backfilled earth is often loosely compressed, which can cause problems for the foundation walls over time.

The loose earth will often expand and contract with changes in the weather. Clays in the soil in particular gain a large amount of volume when they get wet, causing thme to expand. This expansion can press against the foundation walls and, over time, cause cracks and bowing.

In order to fix bowing walls and make sure the expansion of the soils around the home doesn't continue to threaten the structure, wall anchors are installed. Wall anchors work by attaching a plate to the inside of the wall and connecting it to an anchor plate buried in the compact soil that was not dug up during the construction process. This anchor plate will help to pull the wall even as the expanding soil pushes it. The result is a permanently strengthened foundation wall that can even be straightened back to its original position over time.

For this home in Springfield, IL., bowing walls won't be a concern anymore thanks to the permanent support of the wall anchor system.

Window Well Covers

Many foundation windows are built with a small semi-circular pit in front of the them called a window well. Window wells are designed to allow the window to let in natrual light by blocking back the dirt that would otherwise be pressed against the window.

Window wells are useful, particularly in homes where the foundation windows would otherwise be slightly below the surface of theground. Unfortunately, window wells can cause a problem. The window well that was designed to keep dirt out might also work to hold water in. This water is held by the window well against the window and foundation wall. This could cause the water to leak in around the window and ruin the basement.

In larger window wells like the ones that surround an egress window, a more comprehensive system may be needed to keep the area dry and prevent leaks from getting inside. For these window wells in Sherman, IL. all that was needed was a new window well cover.

While working on a larger project in this home, foreman Jesse C. took the time to clear the window wells out and add several clear window well covers to keep water and debris like leaves or dirt from getting into the window well. The covers will prevent water from getting in while still allowing sunlight into the basement. This simple fix can help alleviate leaking around foundation windows like these.

If your home experiences leaks around the foundation windows, consider adding window wells with window well covers to keep the earth and rain back from the window.

Insulating a Crawlspace

Uninsulated crawlspaces can increase the energy costs of the home substantially. Crawlspaces will allow unconditioned outside air to enter below the home. This outside air will then rise through the home and make the living spaces less comfortable.

Many crawlspaces can't be insulated properly because they are not protected from water leaks and vapor, but those that are should be insulated. Insulating the crawlspace includes blocking any windows and adding insulation to the gaps between the floor joists that make up the ceiling of the crawlspace.

Usually, spray foam insulation is used in these areas as it is difficult to shape other forms of insulation to the space. In this home in Urbana, IL. sealed blocks of insulation are installed and spray foam is used as a supplement to block the cracks and offer total insulation.

Once the crawlspace is totally insulated, uncomfortable outside air won't be able to enter the home from below. This will help save the homeowner on energy costs related to heating and cooling their home, making the cost of insulating a small investment with huge payoffs.

Annual Maintenance

This home in Saint Peters, MO. had previously hired Woods Basement Systems to install waterproofing and foundation wall support systems. These systems would help to prevent the basement from flooding as well as straighten and support the bowing foundation walls.

Recently, Mike B. visited the home to perform a routine maintenance inspection. He inspected the wall anchor system to make sure that the wall was straight and supported. He also inspected the waterproofing system, which included a sump pump and an exterior discharge line. If the pump was not working, he would have been able to replace it during that same appointment. Fortunately, the systems in this home worked well and did not require repairs or replacement.

After checking that all Woods Basement Systems products were operating and in good condition, Mike B. also dropped off a Radon test kit for the homeowners to determine if Radon levels in the home are at safe levels.

Transforming Dirt Crawl Space with CleanSpace

Dirt crawlspaces can be incredibly harmful to the longevity of a home. This is because dirt crawlspaces offer the vulnerable underside of the home no protection from hazards such as pests, water vapor and mold. These things can rise through the dirt and impact the floor joists that make up the roof of the crawlspace - and support your floor!

The best way to combat these dirt crawlspace problems is with CleanSpace™. CleanSpace™ is a tear-proof and waterproof liner that incapsulates a crawlspace, totally protecting it from the dangers of having a dirt floor. Water and water vapor that rises from the dirt gets blocked by the liner and directed to a sump pump to be drained away from the home. CleanSpace™ also has an anti-microbial layer that will block mold and prevent mold from growing on the surface of CleanSpace™.
