Waterproofing Wall Flange
If you look along the built in shelf on the floor there is a lip that you see coming out of the concrete, this is a wall flange. The wall flange creates a space between the floor and wall allowing moisture to seep through to drain into the system.
The trench drain prevents water from getting to the furnace causing damage.
