Chesterfield Home Can Now Withstand the Rain

David plans on living in his house for the rest of his life. When rain ruined his carpet, David sought aid for his leaking basement. Woods Basement Systems performed a free home inspection and advised David to purchase a TripleSafe sump pump as well as WaterGuard, two IceGuards, and our incredible ThermalDry floor tiling.

What makes this a great waterproofing system? The WaterGuard collects water from all directions thanks to its patented wall flanges. The TripleSafe receives water from WaterGuard and pumps it out of the house. To address the possibility of freezing of discharge lines, IceGuard is designed to dispel the backing-up water before it floods the pump. Each product plays an instrumental role in keeping water out of David's basement.

Our exemplary ThermalDry floor tiles nearly sold themselves with their beauty and practicality. These simple snap-on tiles are durable, spill-resistant, and they dehumidify air from the ground using circulation pockets.

David can now happily spend his days of retirement in a dry, happy, healthy home; you can too!

Crawl Space Flooding in St. Charles, MO

Crawl Space Flooding

This week Irene had her crawlspace flooded with water and needed it the water gone as soon as possible.  She also wanted to stop the water flow at its source. The problem was that water was coming in from under the home and getting in through footers and flooding the entire basement.  In turn, this water made it damp and humid, which is the perfect environment for mold to colonize.  Woods Basement Systems came out to evaluate her concerns and see how they could correct the situation. Irene purchased the SmartPump System, the SmartPipe System, the SaniDry XP System as well as the CleanSpace wall coverings to insure that everything would be fixed the proper way once and for all. With all of these systems working together, there was no way water was going to be a concern for her anymore.  The SumpPump would get the water out and the SmartPipe would catch any water coming through the dirt floor.

Now production had to begin, first a hole was dug out and the SmartPump System was placed inside and turned up so that all the water in the basement was pumped out.  Originally the water collected all around the basement, not a trench was dug where the SmartPipe would lie in order to catch any water coming through the dirt floor.  All exteriors lines for the SmartPump were then connected and lead outside of the home. Now that the two main systems where placed and ready to go, the CleanSpace wall covering was placed over the top floor which made it brighter and waterproof. With the CleanSpace done, the last thing to do was to suck out the humid air with the SaniDry System and prevent mold growth.  Irene was very pleased on how her crawlspace turned out and how dry is has become from the original point.  If you or someone you know is looking to have their crawlspace inspected give us a call here at Woods Basement Systems located in Collinsville, IL.

Walls Stabilized and Basement Waterproofed in Gillespie, IL

Kent and Susan T. of Gillespie, IL had a foundation ledge wall that was cracked and bowing inward. Water would come in through the cracks in the ledge wall as well as the wall joints of the other foundation walls and damage the belongings their stored in their basement. They were worried about what might happen if they left the wall any longer and didn’t want to deal with the water anymore so they called Woods Basement Systems. Design Specialist Brenton K. assessed the basement and recommended installing a basement waterproofing system and Geo-Lock Wall Anchors.

Along the cracked ledge wall, Woods installed Geo-Lock Wall Anchors. To counteract external soil pressure on the wall, earth anchors are embedded in more stable soil in the yard and connected to galvanized steel anchor rods which are driven through the wall. The rods are attached to steel wall plates and tightened to permanently stabilize walls in place. They can also straighten the wall over time in most cases.

Woods installed CleanSpace along the foundation walls of the basement. CleanSpace is a durable plastic vapor barrier that prevents moisture from entering the basement through the foundation walls and instead directs it to the drainage system below. It also gives the basement a brighter and cleaner appearance.

Under the CleanSpace, drainage matting was installed on top of the ledge wall. Drainage matting is dimpled so it provides channels underneath it to disperse water coming in through the wall about the ledge down to the vapor barrier on the ledge wall to the drainage system. It keeps any items stored on top of the ledge dry.

WaterGuard was installed along the perimeter of the basement under the concrete floors. WaterGuard is a drainage system that sits away from mud so it won’t become clogged as it collects water from the the foundation walls and wall joints and drains it away to the sump pump.

Woods installed the TripleSafe to collect water from the WaterGuard and pump it out and away from the basement through its discharge lines. The TripleSafe contains a primary, secondary and battery back up pump to keep the basement dry in heavy downpours and power outages. On the exterior of the home, IceGuards were installed on the discharge lines. IceGuards prevent water from getting back into the basement if the lines become frozen during winter months.

Kent and Susan T. have peace of mind that their ledge wall is secure and their basement will stay dry even in severe weather.

Wall Support and Waterproofing

Rick W. from Sappington, MO. had trouble with leaky walls. His basement walls had begun to bow inward, causing the concrete to chip and crack as well. These cracks allowed water to seep into the basement and damage the finished walls inside.

Fixing this problem was a two-part solution. The first thing done to fix this was stabilizing the wall. A wall anchor system was installed in areas that were unsupported or cracking. This system works by connecting an interior plate with an exterior anchor via a steel rod. When the soil outside expands and puts pressure on the foundation wall, that pressure is instead transfered to the anchor. By tightening this system, the wall can also be straightened to fix the bowing and cracking issues.

Once the wall is supported, the problem of water leaks must be addressed. This home had a system to deal with water leaks, but those leaks might still damage the finished walls. Rather than frequently replace damaged or rotting walls, Rick W. had the wood and drywall replaced with BrightWall™ panels. BrightWall™ is not made of organic materials like wood, so it is rot and mold resistant. Its vinyl cover not only offers a pleasant color and finished look to the inside, but also acts as a water barrier, preventing leaks from entering the basement through the wall.

Rick W. won't have to worry anymore now that his walls are supported and the leaks are blocked from entering his finished basement.

Cracking in Block Foundation Walls

Foundation walls are generally made one of two ways. One way is to pour concrete walls similarly to how they pour concrete floors. The other method is to build the walls using stone or cinder blocks.

For homes with block foundation walls, any damage that occurs often occurs along the mortar joints between the blocks, like in this image. In this home in Virden, IL. the pressures from the soil outside expanding due to weather conditions caused the mortar between the blocks to crack and the wall to bow inward. Inward bowing walls can weaken the structure as a whole and can allow water to enter the home and cause further damage. The cracks in this wall were repaired with a joint sealant, but the joint sealant would not support the wall or prevent further bowing. What's worse, the seal would likely break as the wall continued to bow, forcing homeowners to repeat the repairs.

Instead, the homeowners chose to fix the problem right the first time by hiring Woods Basement Systems to install wall anchors to support the bowing wall. Wall anchors work by connecting a plate against the inside of the wall to an anchor buried in stable soil outside with a steel rod. The wall plate is then tightened, creating a pulling force using the rod and anchor. This force will support the wall and, if the anchors are installed in time, will straighten the wall back to its original position. These wall anchors will permanently increase the strength and stability of the foundation wall and will prevent further bowing.

Now the homeowners can patch the cracks knowing that they won't have to repeat the repairs thanks to the wall anchor system supporting their foundation walls.
