This creates a gap and leaves a place for pooled water to enter the structure. Although landscaping normally leads away from the building, overtime the landscaping can build up around the home. 

By putting in sill plate drainage and rocks we can redirect the water away from the foundation. Burying the downspouts and leading them away from the home is also a good way to avoid water from pooling near the foundation. 

The exterior sump pump was added because we could not lead the discharge line far enough away. The sump pump forces the water away.
